APD Recommendations
After meeting with APD on several occasions we have identified that criminals are taking advantage of the dark hillsides to conceal their activities. In response to these security concerns, one effective and proactive measure is to illuminate your home strategically.

Lighting plays a crucial role in deterring criminals and securing your home. A well-lit property reduces hiding spots, increases visibility, and creates a sense of vigilance within the community. By strategically placing lights around your property, you not only enhance the overall safety of your home but also contribute to a safer environment for your neighbors.

-
Perimeter Lighting: Illuminate the boundaries of your property to eliminate hiding spots and discourage potential intruders from attempting a breach. Motion-activated lights along fences, driveways, and walkways provide an excellent deterrent, alerting you to any suspicious activity. Especially homes that boarder a hillside, invest in lighting that shines down and/or up the hillside directly in front of your backyard fence. This lighting should ideally be from dawn to dusk to further strengthen the security capabilities of the lighting.
-
Pathway Lighting: Well-lit pathways not only guide you safely to your door but also deter criminals from attempting unauthorized access. Consider installing path lights or solar-powered stake lights along walkways and entry points.
-
Entry Points: Ensure that all entry points, including doors and windows, are well-lit. Use bright fixtures or motion-activated lights to draw attention to potential intrusion points. This makes it difficult for criminals to approach undetected.
-
Strategic Landscape Lighting: Highlight key features of your property with landscape lighting. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home but also discourages criminals by eliminating shadows and creating a well-lit environment.
-
Smart Lighting Systems: Embrace technology with smart lighting systems that allow you to control and schedule your lights remotely. This not only gives the appearance of an occupied home but also allows you to adapt your lighting strategy based on real-time security needs.

Encourage your neighbors to join the effort by securing their homes with adequate lighting. A well-lit neighborhood is a safer neighborhood, and collaboration enhances the overall security of the community. Share information about lighting best practices and coordinate efforts to address specific security concerns.
