APD Recommendations

Light up the hillside — and your home.

After meeting with APD on several occasions, we identified that criminals are taking advantage of the dark hillsides to conceal their activities. One of the most effective and proactive measures is to illuminate your home strategically.

Lighting plays a crucial role in deterring criminals and securing your home. A well-lit property reduces hiding spots, increases visibility, and creates a sense of vigilance within the community. Strategically placing lights around your property enhances your own safety and contributes to a safer environment for your neighbors.

01 · Tip

Perimeter Lighting

Illuminate the boundaries of your property to eliminate hiding spots and discourage potential intruders. Motion-activated lights along fences, driveways, and walkways are an excellent deterrent. Homes that border a hillside should invest in lighting that shines down and/or up the hillside directly in front of the backyard fence — ideally from dusk to dawn.

02 · Tip

Pathway Lighting

Well-lit pathways guide you safely to your door and deter unauthorized access. Consider path lights or solar-powered stake lights along walkways and entry points.

03 · Tip

Entry Points

Ensure all entry points — doors and windows — are well-lit. Bright fixtures or motion-activated lights draw attention to potential intrusion points and make it difficult to approach undetected.

04 · Tip

Strategic Landscape Lighting

Highlight key features of your property with landscape lighting. This enhances the aesthetic appeal of your home while eliminating shadows that criminals rely on.

05 · Tip

Smart Lighting Systems

Embrace smart lighting that lets you control and schedule lights remotely. This gives the appearance of an occupied home and lets you adapt your strategy in real time.

A well-lit neighborhood is a safer neighborhood.

Encourage your neighbors to join the effort by securing their homes with adequate lighting. Collaboration enhances the overall security of the community. Share information about lighting best practices and coordinate efforts to address specific security concerns on your street and along the hillside perimeter.
